I used to sail competitively back in middle school and I was horrible at it. Most of the time, I was the last to finish a competition. Nevertheless, I still had good memories of it. So I gathered up a few stats from the last SEA Games sailing competitions since 2001. Too bad, there were no sailing competition in 2003 and 2009 SEA Games.
Over the last 4 SEA Games with sailing competitions,
Team Myanmar had won a total of
11 medals out of 146 possible medals in sailing - 4 Golds, 4 Silvers, 3 Bronzes.
That's a mere 8%. Meanwhile, Team Singapore and Team Thailand had been sweeping medals across the board with 44 medals and 41 medals under their belts respectively. Team Malaysia was closing following behind Team Singapore and Team Thailand with a total of 24 medals.
Let us now look at the previous medal breakdowns by teams. Still a depressing story so far.
Here is a good news. Total medal counts DID NOT MATTER since Team Myanmar even didn't compete in most of the events. Hobie16?? Far Platu 25?? It's my first time ever heard of those events. And we won't be hosting those events now either.
Looking at the graph above, we were not doing bad at all. OK, we are a little bit behind for Optimist, but I am optimistic. We had been on leading board for International 420 and 470.
There has also been a strong correlation between host country and the amount of medals won by that country, even in Sailing. Singapore hasn't hosted SEA Games lately, but all the rest of the winning sailing team have. See the highlighted cell below? Percentages of medals were the highest for the teams when they were hosting SEA Games.
Year | Host | Malaysia | Philippines | Thailand | Indonesia | Myanmar | Singapore |
2001 | Malaysia | 22% | 3% | 22% | 8% | 11% | 33% |
2005 | Philippines | 11% | 14% | 31% | 3% | 11% | 31% |
2007 | Thailand | 17% | 13% | 30% | 9% | 4% | 28% |
2011 | Indonesia | 15% | 7% | 30% | 15% | 4% | 30% |
2013 | Myanmar |
By induction, you know what comes next, don't you?
GO TEAM MYANMAR!!!
